I thought you might like to hear about Christopher’s year and CMS Jewellers’ new horizons. So, I’ve commandeered this Studio Talk episode to show you a few things from his year.

Sculpting victory

I can often be found behind Christopher at his computer, watching a design evolve from scribble to render to 3d print (given the screen’s size, it’s a good watch). I’m constantly reminded that the world of design is not only beautiful but complex.

To create something organic, like a flower or, in this case, Athena Nike, to celebrate Kate French’s incredible Modern Pentathlon Gold in Tokyo. He’s become a digital sculptor. Just like physical sculpting without the mess. (a bonus, for sure). Like physical sculpture, you start with a plain shape, adding curves, new dimensions and, most excitingly (we’re often told), applying textures and finishes.

As a gift from her Mum, Christopher sculpted the Greek Goddess of victory - Athena Nike, holding five medals representing Modern Pentathlon’s five disciplines.

Rejuvenating sentiment

Customers often come to Christopher with family heirlooms and sentimental pieces that aren’t worn anymore, but still loved. Rejuvenating items into new designs while retaining sentiment is one of his favourite commissions.

In this case, Joanne had thought of a cuff for some time. So, Christopher created a bespoke design in platinum and gold, setting all the original stones to retain their sentiment. 3D printing a prototype was invaluable for Joanne to try on her cuff before making it.

The year of LAB

It’s always exciting when gemstones and diamonds arrive, and even more so this year with the take-off of laboratory-grown diamonds and the appearance of lab-grown coloured gemstones. Lab-grown diamonds have really spiced up the jewellery scene.

They have an identical crystal structure to natural diamonds and are graded and certified in the same way. The key difference is that they give people choice. Some choose for sustainability reasons, others because you can have a larger stone for the same price.

CMS Studio 2.0

His love of design and innovation continues to give CMS delight and purpose. With Mike (also a designer) “playing architects”, they finally realised their dream of converting our garage into a design studio. A creative space for customers to visit, discuss their ideas and learn more about gemstones in the gem lab.

As you’ll know, sharing information is always on top of his list as part of the effort to continually improve his customer experience. This also includes the new website. Christophe (he goes by many names) and Mike have focused on how customers interact with CMS.

The new site will introduce new collections and, of course, include a good dose of jewellery education with everything from lab-grown diamonds to coloured gems from overseas and what’s going on in the world of jewellery.
